Black Sun at Villa Medici: contemporary art in Rome, 2026–2027

ROME – Black Sun: Petroleum and Contemporary Art brings an international exhibition to Villa Medici from 9 October 2026 to 18 January 2027. It is an option for travellers who want to include contemporary art alongside Rome’s ancient monuments and historic churches.

Why visit during a stay in Rome?

The exhibition asks visitors to look beyond oil as fuel. It connects artists’ materials with industrial landscapes, infrastructure, protest and the cultural institutions supported by fossil-fuel wealth. Familiar names such as Alberto Burri, Robert Rauschenberg and Ed Ruscha appear alongside artists including Monira Al Qadiri and Zina Saro-Wiwa.

The seven-part route moves from extraction to environmental loss. Its international scope makes the subject relevant even if this is your first visit to Italy: the themes concern how societies produce, move and use resources, rather than a local story requiring extensive background knowledge.

The curators’ political and environmental readings are part of the exhibition’s argument. The value of a visit lies in exploring that argument through art, not in expecting a neutral technical survey of the oil industry.

Combine exhibitions carefully

Villa Medici stands above the Spanish Steps and is the seat of the French Academy in Rome. The location can fit a walk around Trinità dei Monti and the Pincio, while the exhibition offers an indoor cultural stop. Confirm access needs beforehand because the surrounding area includes slopes.

Black Sun admission is distinct from booking the guided villa tour. Morellet’s works in the historic rooms require that tour. Do not assume a Black Sun exhibition ticket provides access to every space in the building.
