ROME – Travellers interested in modern and contemporary art can find works by Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin and other international artists at the Hendrik Christian Andersen House Museum. The exhibition The Body as a Home continues until 22 November 2026 and is included in museum admission.
Why visit this smaller museum?
Hendrik Christian Andersen was a Norwegian-American artist who made Rome his home. This museum is his former house and studio, not a museum devoted to the Danish fairy-tale writer with a similar name. Its setting gives visitors a way to discover another aspect of Rome’s international artistic history.
The exhibition brings together 42 artists and sixty works. Rather than presenting a single ideal body, it explores memory, identity, vulnerability and change. The different approaches sit in dialogue with Andersen’s monumental conception of the human figure and his vision of a harmonious world city.
For visitors who already plan to spend time around Piazza del Popolo, the nearby Flaminio area offers an opportunity to add a less familiar house museum. The attraction is both the international selection and the encounter between contemporary works and the rooms of Villa Hélène.
Check the available museum spaces
The official museum notice reports a temporary closure of the Bronze Room for works. A ticket should therefore not be understood as a promise that every part of the permanent collection is accessible.
English-language interpretation has not been confirmed. Visual works provide a point of entry, but visitors who need an English guided explanation should contact the museum before organising a tour.
