ROME – The Barberini Mithraeum offers a focused encounter with ancient Rome beneath the Palazzo Barberini complex. From 3 October 2026, visitors can join a 45-minute guided tour on Saturdays at 10am, 11am or noon. Each group is limited to twenty people.
Why add this underground site to a Rome itinerary?
A mithraeum was a sanctuary associated with the cult of Mithras, one of the religious traditions practised in the Roman imperial world. Here, the main attraction is painted imagery rather than an enormous ruin: Mithras killing the bull is surrounded by zodiac signs, figures of the Sun and Moon, and smaller scenes.
The setting helps explain why Rome’s archaeology extends beyond the Colosseum and Forum. This is a compact ritual space, discovered during building work in 1936, where a guided explanation can connect unfamiliar symbols with the people who used them. The short, documented visiting time makes it possible to plan the rest of the day around the booking.
Check the tour language before booking
A guided visit is compulsory. The sources checked do not state the language of these Saturday tours, so an English-language explanation cannot be guaranteed. Ask the ticket operator before paying if that is essential to your visit. A combined ticket also includes the collections at Palazzo Barberini and Galleria Corsini; these are additional museum visits, not part of the 45-minute underground tour.
