Pontormo exhibition in Rome 2026: Scuderie del Quirinale tickets and visit

Share

Rome’s Scuderie del Quirinale will host an exhibition devoted to Pontormo from 9 October 2026 to 7 February 2027. For travellers interested in Italian painting, it is an opportunity to see works normally held in different collections within one exhibition. Public admission begins on 9 October; the press preview on 8 October is a separate event for accredited media.

Why include Pontormo in a Rome itinerary?

Pontormo was a Florentine painter working in the sixteenth century, when artists began to move beyond the balanced compositions associated with the High Renaissance. His expressive figures and unexpected colours help explain the art often described as Mannerism. The exhibition offers a focused encounter with this development during a stay in Rome, without needing a separate trip to Florence.

A central announced loan is the Visitation from the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano. Mary and Elizabeth meet in the foreground, surrounded by vivid pink, green and blue garments. Their embrace and the two accompanying women make the painting visually engaging even for visitors unfamiliar with its biblical subject. The press selection also presents Supper at Emmaus, Portrait of a Halberdier and Resurrection.

What the exhibition brings together

Curated by Cristina Acidini with a team of specialists, the show combines paintings with works on paper in a mainly chronological presentation. The organisers announce loans from the Uffizi and international collections including the Louvre and the Getty Museum. Drawings add another perspective on how Pontormo developed his figures.
