Jerico’s tactile mural in Testaccio: a street art stop in Rome

Share

Jerico Cabrera Carandang’s mural in Testaccio offers a small-scale encounter with contemporary public art. It is painted on a school’s boundary wall on Via Galvani, rather than inside an exhibition venue. The project’s official IAPB page gives the address as number 10.

Three panels develop a pearl into an eye. The Italian campaign slogan links the image to protecting eyesight, but the visual sequence is understandable without reading a long text. The project also incorporates raised surfaces, which its organisers describe as designed for tactile exploration by blind and partially sighted people.

What makes the work different

Colour is only part of the composition: texture and relief contribute to how the work can be experienced. It was created for IAPB Italia with Rome’s city administration involved and creative direction by Sabina Leoni for LTM & Partners.

For travellers, its appeal is a brief encounter with artwork embedded in everyday city life. It makes more sense as one stop on a Testaccio walk than as a destination requiring an entire afternoon. Allow around 10–15 minutes as an editorial estimate; organised tactile tours have not been announced in the sources checked.
