Morellet at Villa Medici, Rome: exhibition and guided tours 2026–2027

Share

ROME – A visit to Villa Medici this autumn can combine Renaissance surroundings with the geometric art of François Morellet. Roman Picnic brings five works into the villa’s historic spaces between 9 October 2026 and 18 January 2027. To see them, book the guided villa tour: a temporary-exhibition ticket alone is not the access route for this display.

Why it fits a Rome cultural itinerary

Morellet worked with simple shapes, systems and chance, often using neon to change the way a room is perceived. The exhibition places this visual language among the villa’s older interiors, including rooms associated with the painter Balthus. It offers visitors who enjoy architecture and contemporary art a reason to look at both together.

Roman Picnic is the exhibition’s title, not a food event. It evokes the artist’s view that spectators bring their own experiences to a work. You do not need a detailed knowledge of Italian cultural history to approach lines, light and spatial relationships here.

Book an English tour

The villa is the home of the French Academy in Rome and offers guided visits in several languages, including English. The published English schedule lists morning and afternoon sessions; choose an available English slot in the booking calendar rather than relying on general opening hours.

The tour ticket also admits visitors to the villa’s current exhibitions. If you plan to add Black Sun, allow separate time after the 90-minute tour. Morellet’s mosaic at Re di Roma metro station is a further, independent city stop, not a location visited by the guide.
