Palazzo Albergati in Bologna presents From Gaudí to Picasso: Masterpieces from the Carmen Thyssen Collection from 9 October 2026 to 29 March 2027. Curated by Jordi Falgàs and organised by Arthemisia, the exhibition brings together more than 100 works to explore Barcelona’s role in the emergence of modern art.

Featured image: Pere Torné Esquius, Table in the Garden, c. 1913. Oil on canvas, 49 × 65 cm. Museu Carmen Thyssen Barcelona.

From the late nineteenth century to the avant-garde

Antoni Gaudí, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró appear alongside Santiago Rusiñol, Joaquim Mir, Isidre Nonell, Josep de Togores, Joaquim Torres-García and Julio González. The range of artists offers a broader view of the period than a sequence of famous names alone: it shows how different approaches developed within a shared cultural setting.

Barcelona connects the story’s architecture, painting and experiments in form. The exhibition also falls in the centenary year of Gaudí’s death, placing his work within the wider changes that reshaped European art.

A preview of a future Barcelona collection

The selection includes works intended for the future Museu Carmen Thyssen Barcelona. For travellers in Bologna, it offers an opportunity to encounter both familiar artists and less widely exhibited figures in a single visit.

Pere Torné Esquius’s Table in the Garden, dated around 1913, provides a quieter point of entry: its domestic setting, plants and colour belong to the visual world explored by the exhibition.
