CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin presents Letizia Battaglia: Works 1970–2020 from 17 October 2026 to 7 February 2027. Curated by Walter Guadagnini, the exhibition spans five decades through more than 200 photographs, 22 magazines and a documentary.

A wider portrait of Palermo

Battaglia’s reporting for the Palermo newspaper L’Ora and her photographs of Mafia violence are central to her work. This exhibition also follows her attention to children, neighbourhoods, festivals and ordinary life in Sicily.

Looking across these subjects reveals how civic commitment and close observation belong to the same practice. The photographs move between public events and individual lives, offering a fuller account of the city than a selection of its most famous news images.

Images, publications and public life

Magazines and archival material show the connections between photography and writing. Battaglia’s editorial projects and public engagement help place her pictures within the wider work of communicating and participating in society.

The exhibition project was developed by CAMERA and the Jeu de Paume in Paris with the Archivio Letizia Battaglia. For visitors to Turin, it provides a substantial introduction to an influential Italian photographer.
