The MAC – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Ludovico Corrao in Gibellina presents Liu Bolin’s Macerie from 17 October to 10 December 2026. Curated by Andrea Cusumano with Galleria Gaburro, the exhibition includes ten photographs, two of them created through performances in the Belìce area in June 2026.

New photographs from western Sicily
At the Grande Cretto in old Gibellina, Bolin blended his painted body into Alberto Burri’s work over the remains of the earthquake-destroyed town. A second performance placed him among the stone structures of the Temple of Hera at Selinunte.
These settings connect the artist’s practice with different layers of memory: the recent history of destruction and reconstruction, and the much longer life of an archaeological landscape. The museum show presents photographs of those interventions; it does not announce a new series of live performances.
The landscape and the disappearing figure
Known as The Invisible Man, Bolin uses body painting to reproduce the surrounding surfaces, colours and shadows. His apparent disappearance draws attention to the setting as well as the figure within it.
The exhibition is part of Gibellina’s year as Italian Capital of Contemporary Art. It offers a focused starting point for visitors interested in the relationship between art and the rebuilt town’s history.
