Kandinsky in Rome 2026: Palazzo Bonaparte exhibition and visitor guide

Share

The Kandinsky exhibition at Palazzo Bonaparte runs from 15 September 2026 to 14 February 2027. It offers a change of pace from Rome’s ancient monuments and Renaissance churches: instead of following religious or historical narratives, visitors can explore how colour and shape became subjects in their own right.

Curated by Angela Lampe, the exhibition brings together more than seventy works. The sequence follows the artist through Russia, Munich and the Blue Rider group, the Bauhaus and Paris. You do not need specialist knowledge to start looking: comparing an early figurative painting with a later abstract composition is a useful way to notice how his visual language changes.

Highlights and context

Announced works include With the Black Arch, painted in 1912, and Yellow-Red-Blue from 1925. Their contrasting arrangements of colour and shape provide a starting point for understanding his experiments.

The section on Gabriele Münter places his work alongside that of another artist involved in the same creative environment. Archival material adds context to the paintings. The works themselves are visually accessible, although the languages available for labels and the included audio guide have not been confirmed.

Planning your visit

Palazzo Bonaparte faces Piazza Venezia, making the exhibition practical to combine with a central Rome walk. Timed booking is advisable, particularly if your schedule leaves little room for a queue. The organisers do not publish a standard visit length; allow roughly 60–90 minutes as an editorial estimate, longer if you want to study the documents.
